Andros is a beautiful island located at Cyclades group of islands and it is about two hours from Athens, by a boat from Rafina port. As it is one my absolute favourites, I want to share with you some information about it so that you get to know it better and intrigue you to visit it someday. What I love most about it, is the lovely beaches and the scenery. Whether you take a walk or drive around the island is breathtaking from every angle. Let's get started!
A Few Words about Andros.
The island took its name by general Andros, King of Crete. The World Wars brought a lot of rough times at the island but at the first half of 1900, Andros rises at the top of merchant shipping and of economic prosperity. At the end of 1950 lots of people moved from Andros to Athens, Pireus and the States. I would like to note here that Dimitris Moraitis, a shipowner from Andros was the first to launch the Greece-USA line at the beginning of the 20th century. The last 2-3 decades the island started to develop again focusing on tourism as it has unique natural beauties and great culture. The fact that it is one of the closest islands in Athens also helps a lot.
